Gender-based violence: a silent scourge that destroys lives

Published on 10 July 2025 by Fondation Attou

Introduction

Around the world, millions of women and girls – but also men and boys – are victims of gender-based violence (GBV). These acts of violence are not isolated incidents: they are rooted in social, cultural and economic inequalities between the sexes. They constitute a serious violation of human rights.

What is gender-based violence?

GBV encompasses all forms of violence inflicted on a person because of their gender or gender identity. It mainly targets women and girls, but also LGBTQIA+ people.

Types of violence:

Physical: beatings, injuries, physical abuse.

Sexual: rape, harassment, female genital mutilation, forced marriage.

Psychological: humiliation, threats, isolation, control.

Economic: prohibition from working, deprivation of resources.

Technological: cyberbullying, revenge porn.

Some alarming figures (source: UN Women):

1 in 3 women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence.

Every day, around 137 women are killed by a member of their family.

Less than 40% of victims seek help or report the abuse.

The consequences of GBV

Psychological trauma, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress.

Health problems: injuries, illnesses, unwanted pregnancies.

Withdrawal, dropping out of school, loss of employment.

Impact on children who witness this violence.

🙌 What can be done about GBV?

Raise awareness in schools: equality, respect, consent.

Train professionals (health, police, justice) to listen to victims.

Strengthen laws and their enforcement.

Create shelters, helplines, free access to justice.

Promote men who are allies and committed to fighting violence.

Conclusion

The fight against gender-based violence is not just a women’s issue. It is a collective struggle for equality, dignity and safety for all. Breaking the silence saves lives.
